How to Avoid Learnership Scams in South Africa (2026)

5 min · Updated 3 June 2026

Learnership scams are widespread in South Africa. Fake opportunities advertised on social media cost job seekers thousands of rands every year. Here's how to protect yourself.

The most important rule: legitimate learnerships in South Africa are ALWAYS free to apply for. Any programme that asks you to pay anything before you start is a scam.

7 Warning Signs of a Learnership Scam

1. An application fee is requested. No legitimate SETA-funded learnership ever charges a fee to apply.

2. Documents requested before an interview. Real programmes only request documents at the interview stage or after an offer.

3. The stipend is unusually high. A learnership advertising R25 000/month is almost certainly fake. Typical stipends are R3 500 to R8 000.

4. WhatsApp-only contact from an unknown number. Legitimate employers contact applicants via official company email addresses.

5. No official company website. Always verify the company exists at cipc.co.za before engaging.

6. Urgency pressure. Apply in the next 24 hours or lose your spot. Legitimate programmes have published closing dates, not artificial urgency.

7. The email domain is generic. setalearnerships@gmail.com is not an official company email. Real employers use @companyname.co.za addresses.

8. The application link hides the real employer. Shortened links, file-sharing forms, or unofficial survey pages are risky unless the same link is published on the employer's official website. Prefer URLs on the employer, SETA, university, or government domain.

How to Verify a Legitimate Opportunity

Search the company name on Google and go directly to their official website. Look for the opportunity on their official careers page. If it's not there, treat it as suspicious. Verify company registration at cipc.co.za. If a listing is genuine, the application path should be traceable from an official careers, bursary, SETA, university, or government page without paying a fee.
